Three hundred yards from the villa is an
Equestrian Centre, once run by Captain Mark Phillips, and now the base for a number of topflight polo ponies and international dressage horses. It also provides lessons for beginner's adult and child alike and local hacks for more experienced riders.
For eating out, the
San Roque Club resort offers a wonderful range of alternative dining experiences from local Spanish/Mediterranean cuisine, to relaxed bar snacks in the golf clubhouse or at the resort’s celebrated Japanese restaurant, all within a ten minute stroll of the house.
Located a ten-minute car journey away are five more golf courses, including
Valderrama,
Sotogrande and
Almenara. Fifteen minutes away is the local sandy beach of Alcaidesa with its German-run sailing school offering windsurfing and Hobie Cat catamarans. Twenty minutes away is the majestic Rock of Gibraltar that with its unusual cultural and historical heritage, offers a duty-free haven for shoppers, and fascinating day trips watching dolphins, observing the apes or visiting St Michael’s Caves. Twenty-five minutes north of San Roque lies the remarkable Castellar nature reserve, centered around a mediaeval hilltop fort and deserted natural reservoir. Forty minutes westwards lies Tarifa, a mecca for windsurfers and kite surfers the world over.
The
San Roque Golf Resort is a one-hour drive from Malaga airport in the east, and a twenty-minute drive from Gibraltar. Car-hire is easy and inexpensive.
The club is situated in the majestic foothills of the Sierra Bermeja and offers the peaceful and languorous beauty associated with Andalucian culture and elegance. These qualities are reflected in the clubhouse and in the hotel buildings complex that is built around a beautiful old sherry bodega.
The two championship golf courses home in 2005 /2006 to the Spanish Open, and to the annual European PGA Tour final qualifying school offer extremely challenging golf for amateurs of all handicaps. Fast greens and daredevil drives are eclipsed only by the panoramic views of distant mountains, the sea, a deep gorge, or the area’s spectacular forest of ancient cork oak trees which are the very symbol of the club itself. The Par-72 Old Course, designed by Dave Thomas, is a tight, testing challenge in amongst mature trees and stealthily placed water features. The New Course, opened by Seve Ballesteros in 2003, offers wider fairways but more demanding greens.
The area of Sotogrande and San Roque offers a myriad of alternative restaurants, bars and entertainment hot-spots as well as some beautiful, unspoilt countryside, quiet beaches and historic, typical Andalucian villages. There is also world-class polo and tennis facilities available nearby.
